Busan, Korea 2016
In autumn 2016, the company “PLAN B” invites Etienne de la Sayette to take the musical direction of a street show conceived as a modernized reinterpretation of ancient traditional festivals, related to the famous celebrations of “Cheosok”. The project involves a director, a set designer and professional actors who supervise a troupe of amateurs actors and musicians. To coordinate a troupe of traditional drummers (called “Samul Noli”), a local fanfare, a traditional singer, and a young rapper from Busan (T’Wali) is an exciting challenge for Etienne. He takes advantage of the provided rehearsal and recording studio to compose a music that meets the requirement to make all the intinerant musicians play together and add a pre-recorded part to be played back through a mobile sound system. The show has been represented many times in the parks of Busan and in the “Yang Do” district, a small enclave of the port of Busan, with some of the musicians playing on a moving boat.
